The advent of the dual influences of information and communications technology and globalisation has been credited with a structural move from service and manufacturing-based economies into knowledge-based service economies. Along with these structural global economic changes based on the growing infusion of ICT into the economy and workplaces, has come radical changes in new work practices and patterns. Studies in 2011 and 2015 found that over 75% of large organisations have adopted new work practices and patterns as a direct result of their use and exploitation of ICT and globalised working practices.

A range of previous studies found that the new work practices and patterns have had the primary impact of increasing

  1. Teamwork and collaboration
  2. Job autonomy (for example job crafting)
  3. Job variety and interchange
  4. Levels of interaction, communication and shared decision-making
