The values and behaviours of effective lean managers

Research Briefing

A really useful research study looking at what makes an effective ‘lean’ leader and manager has just been published in the European Management Journal by researchers at three universities in the Netherlands and the United States.

Interest in lean approaches in organisations has increased significantly since the financial crisis of 2007/8 with lean job postings more than doubling in the period since 2008. Additionally, the lean philosophy of eliminating waste and mantra of ‘achieving more with less’ has expanded beyond manufacturing and production into the service and public sector organisations.

The study started with a systematic review of previous research which identified 7 values and 19 behaviours that effective lean leaders and managers applied to their work.
