Research Briefing

Keywords: positive computing, positive psychology, interactive technology, positive technology, Feenberg’s critical theory of technology, side effects

Since about 2010, two trends have converged to create positive computing or positive
technology:

1. The area of human computer interaction, or HCI, has been developing rapidly around the concept of user experience (UX). This trend has led to the increasing recognition that human values, ethics and morals need to be integrated with the design, development and use of interactive systems.

2. The emergence and development of the whole area of positive psychology and how to enhance human and organisational flourishing and optimal functioning. This includes research and the science behind well-being, wisdom and happiness.
